Expectations and common skin concerns
What is Tretinoin?
Tretinoin is an active ingredients that is the only skincare drug approved by the FDA to reduce signs of aging. Tretinoin improves wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, pore size, lentigines (brown spots), elastosis, and skin texture. Tretinoin also stimulates collagen production to thicken and repair the epidermis.
Does tretinoin help with hyperpigmentation?
Yes! Tretinoin can improve hyperpigmentation.
Does tretinoin help with fine lines and wrinkles?
Yes! Tretinoin improves lines and wrinkles by increasing the production of collagen. Fine lines appear over time because your cells produce less collagen, causing your skin to appear thinner and looser. The less collagen your skin has, the less water it can retain, causing structural folds (lines and wrinkles).
What are the side effects of tretinoin?
Side effects can be greatly minimized with proper use (e.g. appropriate strength level for your skin types, pairing tretinoin with compatible ingredients, and using the full Face-Rx system (Skin Regeneration Set). Some common side effects of tretinoin are sensitivity, peeling, or redness, but these can be minimized with proper care and are temporary for the first 2-4 weeks as your skin learns to tolerate.
In some cases people with very sensitive skin may experience burning or stinging, but those will subside. Please use the eNurse feature for more information about potential side effects.
How long until I start seeing results?
In general, studies of topical tretinoin for anti-aging usually show results after two to four months of daily use. It's important to understand that tretinoin works best as a long-term treatment. Long-term studies of tretinoin tend to show the most dramatic results, with people experiencing significant reductions in the appearance of fine wrinkling, coarse wrinkling, skin laxity and other signs of photoaging.
Can I use tretinoin if I have dry or sensitive skin?
Any skin type can benefit from tretinoin, even dry or sensitive skin. Your provider will start you off with a strength-level that is appropriate for your skin type. The Skin Regeneration Set's Night Cream combines tretinoin with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide to hydrate the skin and reduce any side effects of tretinoin use.
Can I use tretinoin if I have acne?
Yes. Keep in mind that you may experience an initial breakout period for 2-4 weeks, especially if you have acne prone skin. Don't worry though - this will subside and your skin will clear up.
Caring for your skin while using the Skin Regeneration Set
Why do I need sunscreen while using tretinoin?
You MUST use SPF during the daytime when using topical tretinoin. Without sunscreen tretinoin can cause your skin to become more sensitive to the sun. Your skin's response to UV rays will return back to normal after a few months, but always apply your SPF-infused Day Cream to prevent photoaging and skin cancer.
Why can't I use tretinoin during the day?
Your skin will be more irritated if you use tretinoin during the day. Not only that, the tretinoin is also likely to break down in daylight and won't get to do the hard work on your skin it does at nighttime.
Why can't I wax my face while using tretinoin?
Because tretinoin thins the skin as it removes dead skin cells from the skin and peeling is very common, when skin that's being treated with tretinoin is waxed it's left painful and red. It can also result in bleeding or scabbing.
What if I become pregnant when using the Skin Regeneration Set?
You should discontinue using the Skin Regeneration Set as soon as you find out that you are pregnant. It's not proven that topical retinoids are 100% safe for pregnant or nursing women.
Will I experience hair loss or liver damage after long-term use of tretinoin?
No. There have been no side effects resulting from long-term use of topical tretinoin.
What products should I avoid using?
Avoid benzoyl peroxide as it is known to decrease the stability of tretinoin. Benzoyl peroxide and other topical antibiotics should be applied in the morning and your tretinoin-infused Night Cream applied in the evening. Also, abrasive cleansers (e.g., face wash with glycolic or AHA/BHA acids) can make the skin more sensitive by damaging the epidermal barrier and should be avoided when using tretinoin.
Where can I use the Skin Regeneration Set?
The Skin Regeneration Set can be applied to the face, neck and chest area. However we recommend only starting with your face and then gradually introducing the tretinoin to other areas so your skin can become adjusted.
